There are several ways to create a complete and beautiful image of a building. Among the most popular are facade paneling, natural or artificial stone coating and plaster. The latter method was and remains one of the best solutions compared to others due to its low price. But nevertheless, bare plaster is not very aesthetic, therefore it is easier and cheaper to give it a bright and effective appearance by painting. The main advantage of painting is that it complements and enhances the useful properties of the plaster. Among them are the following:
- The paint does not allow moisture to pass through, which means the walls get wet and collapse less, and the building will last much longer.
- The paint is hygroscopic. Thanks to this property, the walls do not accumulate condensation, which forms due to the temperature difference inside and outside the building.
- The paint is less susceptible to weathering.
- The paint retains its properties in a wide temperature range, and this is an indispensable property in the Russian climate with hot summers and frosty winters.
- The paint prevents harmful microorganisms from entering the wall and developing.

And of course, all paints have a maximum shelf life, usually no more than two years. Buying expired paint won't turn out well. It dries up, loses its elasticity, it is almost impossible to apply it exactly.

Each variety has its own characteristics of composition and application technology. In addition, the compatibility of different types of paints is not the same. Acrylic and silicone paints lay on each other quite well even without additional primer. And applying a layer of silicate paint over any other will lead to sad consequences. Water based paint actually dissolves silicate.
Acrylic paints are the cheapest and most popular option for the facade, suitable for almost all wall materials. According to most physical and chemical indicators, they have average results compared to other paints, do not fade, and are well resistant to abrasion and cracking. Dispersion paints are not suitable for coating lime plaster and sandstone. For these materials, paints based on silicone resin are better suited. In addition, such paints have a long service life compared to acrylic: up to 25 years.
The advantages of silicate paints are significantly better water resistance and hygroscopicity, excellent adhesion, high resistance to any atmospheric and biological influences. But the disadvantages are very significant - less wear resistance and susceptibility to abrasion. Such paints are usually used only in cases where the requirements for high physical and chemical properties of the outer coatings of the building are preferable to their potential operational problems.
Advice! Hand one paint does not fit well on blocks of aerated concrete; before painting, they must be plastered with special mixtures and thoroughly primed in at least two layers.
Other types of facade paints and their features
Cement paints are rarely used in modern construction due to their great disadvantages. They have a rather limited range of colors, water permeability, lack of bactericidal protection - without serious additional processing, the walls quickly become covered with fungus and mold.
Structural paints are the best in terms of aesthetics. They include special plasticizers, thanks to which the coating acquires a beautiful embossed pattern. But such paints are much more expensive than conventional ones.
Advice! EIf you work with a roller, you should avoid unidirectional movements, and paint randomly - this method allows you to achieve a more uniform layer.
Conditions for painting
Any facade paints for exterior plastering are very demanding on the working conditions. The optimum temperature for painting is 10-25 degrees. It's not superfluous to get acquainted with the weather forecast before starting work: precipitation and strong winds can spoil the surface preparation and negatively affect the paint during drying. It is worth giving preference to quick-drying paints, since every extra hour is an additional risk of moisture and excess dust on the surface, which impairs the appearance.
When choosing, it is worth paying attention to the difference in the properties of glossy and matte paints. Glossy ones are more attractive for their brightness, the ability to shine in the sun - sales managers in hardware stores often recommend them. But the lack of such paints is in the requirement for a perfectly flat base, because any imperfections of the plastered surface appear on them. Matt paints hide the unevenness of the substrate much better.
Advice! FAsad work is best planned for late spring (late April, May, early June) or early autumn (late August, September, early October). Typically, during these periods, the air temperature is consistently within the required range, and the solar activity is not high enough to damage the paint during drying.
Surface preparation and painting
Surface preparation includes several stages:
- Surface cleaning, removal of large irregularities.
- Surface primer (1-2 coats) to improve adhesion.
- Application of additional coatings against bacteria, fungi, mold to improve the biological protection of the coating.
Average paint consumption, depending on the surface, is about 1 liter per 3-5 m2 the first layer of the surface. For the second and subsequent layers, the consumption is 1.5-2 times less. More accurate information is usually indicated on the bank. The optimal color and strength of the coating is achieved in 2-3 layers of paint, so when planning it is important to correctly calculate the required amount and buy with a margin. It is impractical to buy additional paint during work: paints of different batches may differ in shades.
Water-based acrylic paints are diluted with plain water, other types with solvents. When preparing, it is better to use solvents that are recommended by the manufacturer, they are indicated on the can. These solvents are factory tested for paint compatibility and are guaranteed to be safe when mixed.
Advice! RThe uniformity and nature of the layer depends on how to apply the paint. The spray gun produces the smoothest layer with the smallest granulation. When painted with a roller, the structure of the coating will be more pronounced.
